Health Care Reform

d. John Mica voted against the health care reform plan, and feels very strongly that it is a bad decision.
e. Mica believes that the plan is wrong for many reasons. The health care reform would cut Medicare and Medicaid, and Mica fears that without Medicare and Medicaid in effect, the elderly won't be able to get insurance easily. He also claims that with the new reform, it will put the US $200 billion more into a deficit.
f. He is planning on running again in November, which if he is re-elected, that would be his tenth term as being on the House of Representatives. Heather Beaven, of Palm Coast, has announced she will run against him.

A Biographical Sketch of Rufus King

Year of Death: 1827

Schooling: Rufus attended a boarding school as a child, then graduated Harvard College 1st in his class.

Occupation: First he studied under Theophilus Parsons, a very influential justice in Massachusetts. After that, he worked on getting his family back together and invested a share in the lumber trade. Finally after much suspicion, he enlisted in the army. After the army, he finished studying law then opened a practice in 1980. He then was elected to the state legislature, then elected to the Continental Congress.

Three most significant political experiences prior to the convention:
1. started his own law practice
2. elected to state legislature
3. elected to Continental Congress

Convention contributions:
Rufus was one of the first delegates to arrive (he was a prompt guy apparently). He shared the same opinions as James Madison and used his great oratory skills and personality to sway opinions of delegates who were unsure.

Did he sign?
Yes!

What he did after the convention:
He got married, moved to New York, he was elected to the state legislature there, then elected almost immediately to the US Senate. He also served as ambassador to Great Britain, then retired in 1803. He remained in many other political positions until the end of his life.

Most interesting thing(s) about Rufus King:
Quite frankly, his entire life was interesting. He led an extremely fulfilling and successful life. I found out though that he was extremely against slavery and I found that to be interesting.
